Strengthening parenting skills is an important way to enhance child protection and tackle child labour. In cocoa-growing communities, where most child labour takes place within the household, supporting caregivers to adopt positive parenting practices is particularly relevant.

In this context, ICI, in partnership with Nestlé, piloted a parenting skills programme called Families Make the Difference in cocoa-growing communities in Côte d’Ivoire to explore how improving caregivers’ knowledge and practices can reduce child labour and support children’s development.

The findings show that the programme improved parenting practices, significantly reduced hazardous child labour, and protected children from increases in working hours.
