  • Child labour monitoring through locally based agents
    ICI Research and Reports
    5 July 2023
Child labour monitoring through locally based agents
Two core activities of a Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation System (CLMRS) are to raise awareness amongst farming families on harm resulting from child labour; and to identify children in, or at risk of child labour through an active monitoring process. The agents who implement these activities are the primary point of contact between farmers, their children and the CLMRS. Gender dimensions in the role of CLMRS agents
Results from qualitative research on the motivation, perceptions, and experiences of female child labour monitoring agents in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. The study also contains recommendations on a set of measures which have been piloted successfully in two cooperatives

Since 2019, The Centre for Child Rights and Business, has conducted a total of 20 Supply Chain Child Rights Risk Assessments for public and private partners in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and South America to assess the impact of global supply chains on children. This report places child labour in the context of a broader body of research on the detrimental effects of adverse childhood experiences on child development. It explores the multiple factors affecting the severity of child labour - ie. the extent to which child labour causes (irreversible) harm - and discusses the implications. Drawing on over 150 empirical studies, the study covers: How child labour can cause harm An operational definition of the severity of child labour for the cocoa sector An overview of the practical implications for efforts to prevent and address child labour in the
