    ICI Learning Agenda 2022
ICI’s learning agenda is a set of questions to guide ICI's research and learning activities to fill identified knowledge gaps in relation to child labour and forced labour in the cocoa sector. The learning agenda is collectively defined and prioritised, based on input from ICI's members and partners. It sets out our vision for the collective learning process over the next strategic period and will reviewed on an annual basis. This version of the learning agenda was last updated in November 2022.

    Protective School Environment Assessment
The Protective School Environment Assessment is a simple tool to assess three dimensions of a quality learning environment: safety, stability, and nurturance. It is a proxy measure, which captures aspects related to the physical and relational environment at school. Higher scores are associated with lower levels of teacher violence, higher levels of pupil wellbeing at school, and better learning outcomes for children. • Linking child labour, schooling and child wellbeing

Linking child labour, schooling and child wellbeing
This ICI study explores the relationship between child labour, school attendance and child well-being among children in cocoa-growing households in Côte d’Ivoire. This study investigates whether, in the context of smallholder farming in cocoa-growing areas of West-Africa, children’s psychological wellbeing (a proxy for the child’s physical and mental health) and access to school are linked with the intensity of exposure to child work, one of the several determinants of severity of child work. We use data from a survey of 2,274 children in 5 cooperatives in the regions of Gbôklé, Nawa and San

Summary report: The effect of bridging classes on child labour
An estimated 20% of children in cocoa growing areas of Côte d’Ivoire miss out on their fundamental right to education. Bridging classes are a type of accelerated education programme to help out-of-school kids catch up on missed learning and get back into the classroom. From 2019 to 2021, the International Cocoa Initiative set up 131 bridging classes in partnership with the Ministry of Education of Côte d’Ivoire, the Jacobs Foundation and Nestlé, within the framework of TRECC (Transforming Education in Côte d'Ivoire). They used the innovative "Teaching at the Right Level" child-paced learning

Child rights and quality education: Results and learning from an innovative bundle of interventions to improve quality in Côte d’Ivoire
From 2019 - 2021, International Cocoa Initiative (ICI), in partnership with the Ministry of Education of Côte d’Ivoire, implemented a pilot project in eight cocoa-growing communities in Côte d’Ivoire to improve teaching, learning and school facilities for primary school children. The project reached more than 2,200 pupils in primary schools in 5 regions of Côte d’Ivoire. ICI focused on creating a learning environment where children feel safe and protected, guided by effective teachers and school leadership, and supported by their parents and the wider community. A bundle of interventions was
