Ferrero, a member of the International Cocoa Initiative, has launched its Cocoa Charter and Cocoa Action Plan, which outline its commitments for a sustainable cocoa supply chain and its activities to achieve it, and against which the company will report progress on an annual basis.

The ambitions in the Charter are organized under four pillars:

  • Sustainable Livelihoods: provide targeted support to farmers to improve productivity and diversify income
  • Human Rights and Social Practices: protect the rights of children in cocoa growing communities
  • Environmental Protection: supporting farmers to convert to agroforestry systems
  • Transparency: supply-chain traceability, risk assessments and progress disclosure Ferrero’s Cocoa Action Plan outlines how the company will work towards these ambitions.

The Action Plan sets out a number of activities to achieve the Charter including the implementation of child protection systems that can identify households at risk of child labour and remediate cases found, the implementation of community development approaches, the implementation of agroforestry techniques and improving farmer livelihoods, and a platform to give full visibility and traceability over the cocoa supply chain.

At ICI, we welcome Ferrero’s commitment to reach full coverage of Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation Systems or equivalent systems in its supply chain and to protect the rights of children in cocoa growing communities, in addition to its goal of full traceability and regular reporting on progress.
