This paper, produced by the International Labour Organization, reviews the root causes of child labour and analyses the potential impact of microfinance on the reduction, elimination and prevention of child labour. Cases studies from the field are provided for each root cause of child labour labour and its complimentary intervention, illustrating best practices. The paper reaches the general conclusion that microfinance can have a positive impact on child labour, but does not inherently do so, hence the necessity to carefully assess the whole set of child labour causes in each specific case before designing a microfinance intervention.
