This report details the experience of Unilever in a project of certifying some of their chocolate brands by Rainforest Alliance. A review of the project strategy explains how Rainforest Alliance worked to generate demand for certified cocoa, collaborated with governments in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana to expand certification, developed locally relevant guidelines and a services market for training, trained auditors, and helped farmers organize amongst themselves. The benefits to farmers that participated in the certification scheme are presented, as well as some of the challenges. The report ends with reflections and lessons learned.
