This paper offers insights into the impact of gender on child well-being in relation to cash transfers via family and child allowances based on evidence from the Lesotho Child Grants Program.

It shows that the Grants Program increased secondary school-aged girls' enrolment time, resulted in fewer missed days of school and less time doing household chores. For boys of the same age, transfers resulted in nearly one day less working in the fields or with livestock. The paper appears in the journal Population and Development Review.
