ICI partners were recently recognised in Fortune Magazine’s “Change the World” list, which acknowledges companies for their positive social impacts.
Editors at Fortune wrote: “We set out to identify 50 companies across the globe that are tackling major societal problems – reducing damage to the environment, strengthening communities, serving the underserved, and significantly improving lives as a function of their business model – and whose good works contribute to their bottom lines. And this year, as last, Fortune’s reporting staff, our partners at FSG, and an expert panel of outside advisers found dozens of inspirational examples.”
Among those inspirational examples were Nestlé and Olam, both of whom are active in tackling child labour in cocoa production, in partnership with ICI.
Olam has supported ICI’s core programme of promoting child protection in cocoa-growing communities in both Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana since becoming a member in 2013. Their support has helped to provide sustainable solutions to social challenges in the cocoa sector, specifically those related to tacking child labour.
Olam and ICI also collaborate on the ICI-Nestlé Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation System (CLMRS), which is designed to create an environment where the issue of child labour is understood as a serious issue, and is identified and addressed throughout the supply-chain.
Nestlé and ICI have been working together since 2012. As part of the Nestlé Cocoa Plan, ICI has worked to develop and implement the CLMRS system to identify child labour risks in the company’s supply chain. Nestlé’s contribution has also helped to construct schools, classrooms and teachers’ accommodations in cocoa growing communities in Côte d’Ivoire.
