This study, produced by the Transport & Infrastructure Expertise Group for the European Commission, analyses the root causes of child labour in the cocoa supply chain in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana and seeks to identify gaps to be addressed. In addition, it proposes solutions to support the elimination of child labour and the development of sustainable and responsible cocoa production in both countries.

This study provides in-depth analysis of data from Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation Systems (CLMRS) across cocoa-growing areas of West Africa. Building on a concept developed by the ILO as part of its International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC), CLMRS are a means of targeting prevention, mitigation and remediation support to children involved in, or at-risk of, child labour, as well as to their families and communities.

This study, published in the Bordeaux Economics Working Papers, compares two methods – direct questioning and list experiments - to estimate the prevalence of child labour in a sample of 4,458 certified cocoa farms in Côte d’Ivoire.

The report seeks to provide a detailed analysis of the root causes of child labour, and to propose solutions to address them.
