This letter is designed to accompany the distribution of school kits to children and households as part of CLMRS support activities or other programmes addressing child labour.

Every year, ICI members report on their efforts to tackle child labour in the cocoa sector. This allows us to track progress over time, highlight areas for improvement and drive transparency in the sector. The results presented here are from the reporting season October 2023 – September 2024, and cover activities in four countries (Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Cameroun and Nigeria).

Data from children suggest that the prevalence of child labour in the cocoa industry in Côte d’Ivoire is a worrying 38%. However, while surveying children has the potential to reduce sensitivity biases such as social desirability bias, it presents significant ethical dilemmas and may also be associated with other reporting biases, making accurate estimates of child labour difficult. Each year, ICI members report details of their activities to tackle child labour in cocoa. The results presented in this report are from the reporting season October 2022 – September 2023. They are aggregate figures and reflect the collective efforts of ICI members to date on a selection of activities. Key findings: There has been a significant increase in the coverage of Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation Systems across Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon when compared to previous years. 1 million smallholder cocoa farming households are covered by these systems.
