    N’Goran Amoin lives in JeanKouamékro, a cocoa-growing community in Côte d’Ivoire. Up until recently, the community’s children had to endure a long walk to the neighbouring village to go to school. In March 2017, ICI handed over the keys of their own local school to the members of the community.

  • "What I like most about our work is our approach"

    Samuel Kwakye is a community facilitator for the International Cocoa Initiative in the Assin district of Ghana. He develops Community Action Plans (CAPs) with the cocoa communities ICI assists in this district, and works on implementing them together with the community members. Samuel helps them set up an internal system through diverse committees or groups that help to monitor, prevent and offer alternative labour sources to child labour.

  • Literacy classes help the community of N'dénou
    13 September 2016
    In the community of N’dénou in Côte d’Ivoire, ICI is conducting literacy classes with adults. Cocoa-growing communities often have low levels of education and this can be a factor in exacerbating children’s participation in hazardous child labour. In this community the classes had 48 participants, of which 43 were women. Across other communities in Côte d’Ivoire a total of 279 adults are being taught basic numeracy and literacy skills.
