The International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) has developed a good practice in which community registers are used to identify children engaged in, or at risk of, child labour in cocoa production.

This report exploring the achievements, challenges and lessons from efforts to end child labour in cocoa was by Nestlé in October 2017, in partnership with the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI). Launched at the annual meeting of the ILO’s Child Labour Platform, the Tackling Child Labour 2017 report is a comprehensive account of one company’s actions to stamp out child labour in its cocoa supply chain.

The objective of ICI’s Effectiveness Review of Child Labour Monitoring Systems in the Smallholder Agricultural Sector of Sub-Saharan Africa, is therefore to explore ways to increase the cost-effectiveness of Child Labour Monitoring Systems and to identify best practices to guide the establishment and scaling-up of monitoring systems in the smallholder agricultural sector.

This Stop the Traffik report assesses how the six biggest chocolate manufacturers (Ferrero, Hershey, Lindt & Sprüngli, Mars, Mondelez and Nestlé) and three leading certification systems (Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance and UTZ) are addressing the issues of human trafficking and child labour in the cocoa supply chain.
