The Walk Free Foundation, an Australian organisation dedicated to ending contemporary slavery and human trafficking, issued the 2018 version of their “Global Slavery Index” on 19 July 2018. The index provides a country by country ranking of the number of people in modern slavery, as well as an analysis of the actions governments are taking to respond, and the factors that make people vulnerable. This year, the Global Slavery Index featured a chapter on forced labour related to cocoa in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

This report presents a Living Income benchmark for cocoa-producing areas of Ghana. The benchmark was commissioned by the Living Income Community of Practice, which brings together sustainability standards systems, businesses, government bodies, NGOs, finance and producer groups to support activities focused on improving smallholder incomes, and enabling farmers to achieve a decent standard of living.

This analysis from ICI summarises key findings from the 2018 Global Slavery Index report, which includes a special focus on forced labour and child labour in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana.

This major study by the Royal Tropical Institute aims to contribute to the cocoa sector’s body of knowledge and provide a solid evidence base to test common assumptions and beliefs.

Not all work done by children is classified as child labour targeted for elimination. Children’s or adolescents’ participation in economic work that does not affect their health and personal development or interfere with / prejudice their schooling or their participation in vocational orientation or training programmes is generally regarded as positive.
