This issue paper brings together and reviews existing research on the interplay between climate change and child labour. It is aimed at providing an initial picture of some of the key channels through which climate change and climate change responses are linked to child labour, and the broad implications for policy moving forward.

The international cocoa sector is increasingly acknowledging the presence of child labour in cocoa-producing regions, which has led to a wide range of sustainability initiatives. A common strategy of cocoa sustainability programmes is to decrease child labour by increasing households’ income towards a living income. This paper aims to explore how household income, farm productivity and alternative income-generating activities are related to child labour prevalence.

An estimated 50 million people were living in modern slavery on any given day in 2021, an increase of 10 million people since 2016. Walk Free’s flagship report, the Global Slavery Index (GSI) provides national estimates of modern slavery for 160 countries. The estimates draw on thousands of interviews with survivors collected through nationally representative household surveys across 75 countries and an assessment of national-level vulnerability. Since 2019, The Centre for Child Rights and Business, has conducted a total of 20 Supply Chain Child Rights Risk Assessments for public and private partners in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and South America to assess the impact of global supply chains on children.
