NORC at the University of Chicago’s report “Assessing progress in reducing child labor in cocoa production in Cocoa Growing Areas of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana” presents a comprehensive analysis of the child labour situation in cocoa-growing areas of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana.

In parallel with its analysis of child labour in cocoa-growing areas in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, NORC at the University of Chicago conducted a study, funded by the World Cocoa Foundation, that examined the effectiveness of industry interventions in reducing the prevalence of hazardous child labour.

This technical summary is intended for stakeholders with an interest in the child labour situation in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. It provides a short summary of key findings from the NORC 2018/9 Report, and where possible, places them in context alongside the results of the two previous surveys from 2008/9 and 2013/4, conducted by Tulane University.

The Fair Labor Association has released a social impact assessment of Nestlé’s Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation Systems in Côte d'Ivoire, implemented with the International Cocoa Initiative. The report shows that CLMRS are having a positive impact on child protection and farmer livelihoods and suggests areas to strengthen their impact further.
