This article recounts the history of the international cocoa industry moving toward the acknowledgement of serious labour issues in the global cocoa supply chain, and then a public commitment to act to address the problems.

Produced by the International Labour Organization, these guidelines provide information on how to design, develop and operate child labour monitoring. They describe a generic model of the process of child labour monitoring along with practical examples.

This document presents Ghana’s first nationwide survey specifically designed to collect information on the various aspects of child labour within the country.

The primary strategic objectives of this study vis-à-vis child labor were to document the number of children working in the cocoa sector; their status with respect to origin, mode of recruitment (if hired labor), position in farm household, and school attendance; the conditions in which these children work; and the reasons for child labor in the cocoa sector.

In September 2001, chocolate and cocoa industry representatives signed an agreement, developed in partnership with Senator Tom Harkin and Representative Eliot Engel, to eliminate the worst forms of child labour in the growing and processing of cocoa beans and their derivative products wherever cocoa is grown.
