This joint report by Human Rights Watch, Initiative for Social Economic Rights, and Friends of the Nation, examines the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on child labour, children’s rights and poverty in Ghana, Nepal, and Uganda. It analyses responses, such as cash transfers, and provides recommendations to governments, donors, and companies to address issues related to child protection, education, and child labour.

With the scale up of Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation Systems (CLMRS) advancing, and calls from civil society to set clear definitions and reporting benchmarks, the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) carried out a review of these systems, commissioned by the Swiss Cocoa Platform.

This report analyses the impact of the International Cocoa Initiative’s Community Development Programme on child labour and its severity in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. ICI’s Community Development Programme supported 75 cocoa-growing communities in both countries over four years, between 2015 and 2018, with the overall aim of improving these communities’ capacity to protect children.

The Cocoa Barometer 2020, produced by the Voice Network, provides an overview of the current sustainability developments in the cocoa sector and highlights current critical issues. It presents an overview of sustainability developments at the national, global and industry level and explores challenges related to living income, human rights (including child labour), the environment, and the creation of an enabling environment.

Earlier this year the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) analysed data from 263 communities in Côte d’Ivoire to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on child labour. In these communities, 1,443 cocoa-growing households were visited under ICI’s Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation Systems (CLMRS) between 17 March and 15 May 2020 to identify cases of child labour.
