To mark World Day Against Child Labour 2025, the Asunafo North Municipal Child Protection Committee, in partnership with the International Cocoa Initiative, Asunafo Cocoa Farmers Union, Fairtrade Africa, Tony’s Open Chain, Right to Play, and Adom Cocoa LBC, organized a community event in Ayensuako (Nfante) in Ghana’s Ahafo Region.
The event aimed to raise awareness about child protection through community engagement, advocacy, and sports. It focused on educating the public on the difference between child labour and acceptable child work, promoting education, and encouraging collaboration to protect children’s rights.
The day kicked off with a vibrant float at Asumura Market, where school children carried placards with messages about the importance of education and the dangers of child labour. The procession, accompanied by a brass band, passed through Asumura, Anyemaye, and Ayensuako, capturing the attention of market vendors and passersby. Many joined in, helping to spread the message.
Stakeholders used this opportunity to educate the public about child labour and the importance of adult supervision in children’s development. Educational activities focused on clarifying the distinction between child labour and child work and emphasized the role of adults in guiding children.
The Municipal Chief Executive of Asunafo North highlighted the role of local governance in protecting children. “Child labour robs our children of their future. Let us unite to safeguard the dreams of the next generation,” he said.
The chief of Ayensuako (Nfante) spoke of the community’s cultural value of children. “Let us not allow ignorance and life pressures to steal their futures. As leaders, we must protect these children,” he stated.
The Chairman of the Municipal Child Protection Committee noted, “Today is not just a celebration, but a call to action. Together with our partners, we renew our commitment to ending child labour in all its forms.”
The event also featured an inter-school football gala, with nine primary schools participating. The event fostered unity and highlighted the importance of community responsibility in protecting children’s rights.
