Background to ICI

Established in 2002, the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) is a non-profit foundation set up to help tackle child labour and forced labour in cocoa-growing communities. ICI works with the cocoa industry, civil society and national governments in cocoa-producing countries to promote child rights and workers’ rights. 

Terms of reference

ICI is seeking enumerators to conduct a survey using its Protective Community Index Tool to rapid assess access to services that help protect children in cocoa-growing communities. The survey is intended to capture factors related to children’s fundamental rights, such as quality education and safe water as well as other community characteristics that are associated with lower levels of child labour. The survey will be conducted from January, 2026- February, 2026 with data collection spanning a 20-day period. Enumerators will be expected to undertake the following activities;

  1. Pre-Enumeration duties:
  • Attend enumerators’ training and strictly follow ICI Ghana survey protocols;
  • Receive enumeration materials and equipment from the team leader
  1. Enumeration duties:
  • Locate sample members
  • Set interview dates with respondents
  • Conduct interviews with respondents
  • Record responses as instructed
  • Comply with the requirements necessary for conducting a successful interview
  1. Post-Enumeration duties:
  • Report any unusual situations to the team leader on a daily basis
  • Ensure that all questionnaires and equipment are accounted for
  • Turn over all literature and materials used in the survey to the team leader
  • Participate in debriefing meeting
  • Follow confidentiality and security procedures to ensure respondent privacy is protected

Required: 

  • Candidate must be at least a Senior High School graduate; preference will be given to candidates with a first degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) from a recognised institution. 
  • A minimum of one year experience in surveys/data collection (household surveys, school-based surveys, community surveys, etc)
  • Candidate should be fluent in English and Twi
  • Ability to use smartphones/tablets and common electronic data-collection tools/platforms (e.g. KoboToolbox, ODK, SurveyCTO).
  • Good communicator, with the ability to engage with diverse respondents, show respect and maintain confidentiality and professionalism during interviews
  • Prior experience of working in the cocoa sector
  • Candidate should be willing to travel long distances to remote/rural communities and possibly work outside typical hours if needed
